A trip on the 'Ocean View'

(This video has no sound)

Ex-GN Great Dome Ocean View was a surprise addition to Amtrak's Adirondack for four weeks in October and November, 2007.

I couldn't pass up this rare chance to ride a dome (and an ex-GN one at that) on one of the most scenic rail routes in the world.

Although a shadow of its former glory, Ocean View was exceptionally well-riding, even on rougher stretches of track, and there was no noticeable extra sway as you might expect from such a tall car. Most of the GN details had long ago been replaced with standard Amtrak furnishings, and the lower level cafe had no food service since the train consist included an Amfleet cafe.

This trip took place Nov. 3-4, 2007 and the video shows there were still plenty of fall colors to be seen so late in the season.

Let's just hope Amtrak brings its sole dome back to the Adirondack in the near future.
